West Germany at the 1966 World Cup - Original Photos
Football gold dropped through my letterbox this weekend. I’d spotted some original photographs taken at the 1966 World Cup up for sale on a well known auction site so being a bit of nostalgia nerd I just had to have them. Here’s a selection for your viewing pleasure.
The bottom photo shows West German fans cheering on their team during the Group 2 game against Argentina at Villa Park. The game, watched by 51000 ended 0-0.
The bottom photo is a shot of a British Army marching band providing pre-match entertainment prior to the quarter-final tie between West Germany and Uruguay at Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough ground. The two middle photos are action shots from the game itself, which was watched by a crowd of 34000 who saw the Germans beat Uruguay 4-0.

Now that the England v Poland game has been rearranged to tomorrow the 17th October it’s time to take a trip down memory lane to the same day 39 years ago in 1973 when England met Poland at Wembley.
The English were expecting to win comfortably and Brian Clough famously said of the Polish goalkeeper Jan Tomaszewski that he was like a “circus clown in gloves”.
The clown had the last laugh however as he produced a dazzling yet unorthodox display to keep England at bay. The 1-1 draw was enough to deny England a place in the World Cup finals. Read more here - Polish Clown Laughs Last

Italien Weltmeister 1982: I’ve previously posted this Italian stamp but here we have it used on a German cover showing the iconic image of Dino Zoff lifting the World Cup on which the design of the stamp is based, together with a matching first day of issue postmark. (Calcio: A History of Italian Football)
This is one of my favourite football stamps of all time. Captures beautifully the iconic moment when Dino Zoff lifted the 1982 World Cup following Italy’s 3-1 win over West Germany in the final.

A Postcard Home - World Cup Souvenir 1966
Argentina v Switzerland Group 2 First Round game held on 19th July 1966 at Hillsborough, Sheffield.
Argentina won 2-0 courtesy of second half goals from Luis Artime, who with 24 goals from 25 appearances is one of Argentina’s most prolific international goalscorers and Ermindo Onega. Argentina finished second in Group 2 and went on to meet England in the quarter-finals to whom they lost 1-0 at Wembley.
Switzerland finished bottom of Group 2 with the worst playing record of any of the sixteen participating nations. They lost all three group games scoring only one goal and conceding nine.

Scotland depart for the 1978 World Cup finals. Scottish manager at the time Ally McCoist McLeod when asked what he would do after the World Cup replied, “retain it”. Royal Mail even had a special stamp ready to celebrate a Scottish victory - Scotland World Cup Winners 1978 ..
