First Football Memories

Given my predilection for the more nostalgic side of football I have been enjoying in recent weeks the offerings on twitter of @retrombm. They have been presenting for our enjoyment a constant stream of videos featuring pre-premiership games from seasons gone by. All these classic matches got me thinking about the first games of football I can remember watching. I’ve wrote previously about the Sheffield United v Arsenal FA Cup game of 1978 which was the first ever live game I went to but now I’m gonna take a trip down memory lane and revisit the first game I can remember watching on the telly as a young lad not long out of short trousers.

Kwame Nkrumah and Ghana’s Black Stars

Great video with some vintage footage about the rise of Ghanaian football following independence in 1957 and the pivotal role played by Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah. Did you know that the Ghana national football team’s nickname, the Black Stars, is a nod towards Marcus Garvey and the shipping line he founded in the early 1900s.

United have managed to organise the most awesome pre-season friendly for many a year. South American Club Champions Estudiantes will visit Sheffield at the beginning of August and the game will see the return of our very own magical mercurial Argentinian Alejandro ‘Alex’ Sabella. He is of course these days Estudiantes manager but once upon a time he graced the hallowed Bramall Lane turf.
