Up for the Cup
FA Cup Round 1 day and the Blades are away at Bristol Rovers. A decent excuse to dig out my Blades Rosette, a relic of football watching past. It has a dubious replica of the FA Cup on it with the words The Football Association Cup, however I think I got it at an Anglo Scottish Cup tie v Grimsby or a League Cup tie v Arsenal!
Let Arthur Wharton come back from the dead
To see the man in black blow the final whistle.
Let the game of two halves be beautiful,
Not years ahead. Let every kissing of the badge,
Every cultured pass, every lad and lass,
Every uttered thought, every chant and rant,
Every strip and stripe – be free of it.
Then football would have truly played a blinder,
And Arthur returned to something kinder.
Let the man in black call time on racism.
And Arthur will sing out on the wings,
Our presiding spirit – the first black blade.
Imagine having everything to play for.
This is our pitch. Now hear us roar.

Rotherham United & Sheffield United - Panini 1981
A bit of a trip down memory lane thanks to the Panini football collection of 1980/81. Here’s the squad stickers & club info for the two Uniteds of Rotherham and Sheffield complete with an enthusiastic schoolboy endorsement for the Blades.
The Millers had finished the season Champions of Division 3 (current League 1) and the double they recorded over their big-city neighbours the Blades helped send the Sheffield club down into Division 4.
The Blades sacked the hapless Harry Haslam and it was to Millmoor the club looked in search of a replacement. Ian Porterfield left the Millers, dropping 2 divisions in the process, and took over the managerial reigns at Bramall Lane. Not a bad move as it turned out for he bagged his second successive promotion as he led the Blades out of Division 4 at the first attempt.
I went to Wembley last week to watch Sheffield United take on Huddersfield Town in the Football League One Play-Off Final. It ended 0-0 AET so went to penalties. Huddersfield missed their first three but still went on to win 8-7. There’s good report here - Wembley Strife and £4 Pints
That’s now four play-off finals that the Blades have lost - all without scoring a goal.
A shocking record but hey as Bladesmen from the Lane We’ll Carry on Regardless
There is some happy news though. In 1892/93 the Blades, along with Darwen, by virtue of victory in end-of-season Test matches - play-offs in all but name - became the first two football clubs in the World to be promoted. How cool is that!

The Prince of Half-Backs - Ernest Needham
As Sheffield United captain he led the club to the first division championship in 1898 as well as runners-up spots in 1897 & 1900. He lifted the FA Cup for the Blades in 1899 & 1902 as well as being a losing finalist in 1901.
He represented England 16 times included one occassion as captain - a 6-0 win over Wales at St James’ Park in Newcastle. He marked his captaincy with a goal.
He also played first class cricket for Derbyshire & he even wrote a book Association Football by Ernest Needham. What a guy - a true club legend.

The Greasy Chip Butty Song
Challenged by photo-blogging site blipfoto to come up with a visual representation of his favourite song James Lister came up with this. (via fillingupmysenses)

The last time the Blades won anything of note was the Division 4 title back in 1982. This led to the rather rare occurrence of a Sheffield Utd player holding aloft a trophy!
