Sheffield FC: Give The Gift of Football

Happy birthday Borussia Dortmund with love from the World’s First Football Club Sheffield FC 1857
A delegation from Sheffield FC are on their way to Germany to help celebrate BVB’s 104th birthday. They’ll take with them this gift of an engraved Friendship Bowl that was made in Sheffield and in doing so cement a friendship founded on shared values of respect, community and inclusion. Earlier this year BVB made a visit to Sheffield FC in order to discover the roots of the game with a club official saying,

"We wanted to visit the cradle of football and find inspiration. After all, it all started here in Sheffield and we at Borussia Dortmund are committed to tradition .. there are parallels between the two clubs. Sheffield FC´s values are based on respect and integrity, without distinction of social origin, nationality, religion, sex or age - values that have also always been shared by the BVB´s black and yellow family - coming together in their love of football."

A sentiment I’m sure we can all share.

Now THIS is what you call football history

Two photos I took of a couple of exhibits on display at Legends of the Lane, the Sheffield United football museum at Bramall Lane. I’ve posted these photos up before but here they are together for the first time.

On the left the original hand written 'Sheffield Rules'. These rules formed the basis of the World’s first football culture in and around Sheffield from the late 1850s. On the right the actual Youdan Cup, the World’s first football competition the final of which was played at Bramall Lane in 1867.

24th October - Happy Birthday Sheffield FC

Sheffield FC - The World’s first football club is 154 years old today. (24/10/11)

Here’s a selection of programme covers from landmark games in the club’s history. First up we have the the game against Scotland’s oldest club that was played on 24th October 1957 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the club. Then in 1977 came the club’s finest modern-day moment. A visit to Wembley to play in the FA Vase final. Manchester Utd provided the opposition for the 125th anniversary game whilst Inter Milan, who including World Cup winner Marco Materazzi and a certain Marco Balotelli in their line-up, made the trip to Sheffield to play in the 150th anniversary game.

Sheffield FC Handwritten Rules of 1858

It’s been reported that Sheffield FC, the World’s first football club, are planning to auction an archive of historical documents that include a pamphlet containing the original handwritten rules of 1858. Auctioneers estimate that the archive could fetch in excess of one million pounds. Money that club chairman Richard Tims says is essential to ensure the future of the club.
