A Postcard Home - World Cup Souvenir 1966

Argentina v Switzerland Group 2 First Round game held on 19th July 1966 at Hillsborough, Sheffield.

Argentina won 2-0 courtesy of second half goals from Luis Artime, who with 24 goals from 25 appearances is one of Argentina’s most prolific international goalscorers and Ermindo Onega. Argentina finished second in Group 2 and went on to meet England in the quarter-finals to whom they lost 1-0 at Wembley.

Switzerland finished bottom of Group 2 with the worst playing record of any of the sixteen participating nations. They lost all three group games scoring only one goal and conceding nine.

Penarol - Intercontinental Club Champions

Uruguay - Penarol Intercontinental Champions 1966

Barcelona and Estudiantes go head-to-head on Saturday in the final of the 2009 FIFA Club World Cup. So we’ll take a trip back to yesteryear & revisit the competition in it’s former guise as the Intercontinental Cup. Above you’ll see a rather fetching postal cover commemorating Penarol’s 1966 success.

Penarol had taken part in the first World Club Championship in 1960, losing 5-1 on aggregate to Barcelona’s great rivals Real Madrid. Their victory in 1966 was payback for this defeat as they again met Real Madrid and beat them 4-0 on aggregrate.

Gordon Banks Testimonial 1973

Testimonial programme for Gordon Banks. England’s 1966 world cup winner. Stoke City v Manchester United at the Victoria Ground in 1973. Scanned pages from the programme. Easiest way to read this is to toggle full screen using the icon in the top right then zoom in to increase the text size.

Sheffield Wednesday v Bulgarian XI Aug 1966

Wednesday’s Hillsborough ground had hosted three group games and a quarter final during the 1966 World Cup finals. This programme cover from a 66/67 pre-season friendly between the Owls and a Bulgarian select team commemorates that by showing World Cup Willie, the first ever World Cup mascot proudly grasping and making off with the Jules Rimet Trophy.

I have no idea what the caption ‘League Division One and World Cup Winners at Hillsborough’ means. Wednesday hadn’t won the League in 1966 nor as we all know had Bulgaria won the World Cup.
