Vintage footage 1902 Sheffield United v Bury

Sheffield United were one of the leading clubs of the time and the team they put out to play this first division fixture against Bury contained eight internationals. Also lining up for the Blades that day was Herbert Chapman who went on to become a legendary football manager. The Blades won the match 1-0 in front of 14153 fans and went on to finish in 4th place in that season’s league competition.

The footage shows a shot of Bramall Lane’s new John Street stand which was the first Archibald Leitch stand to be built in England. Opened in September 1901 it seated 3800 spectators with a terrace in front that held 6000. A further proposal for a two-tiered stand at the Bramall Lane end of the ground was rejected as it would have interfered with the light at cricket matches.
