I’d spotted some original photographs taken at the <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1845332350/?tag=clubhouseiron-21" target="_blank">1966 World Cup</a> up for sale on a well known auction site so being a bit of nostalgia nerd I just had to have them. Here’s a selection for your viewing pleasure.</p> <p><span>The bottom photo shows West German fans cheering on their team during the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1966_FIFA_World_Cup#Group_2" target="_blank">Group 2</a> game against Argentina at Villa Park. The game, watched by 51000 ended 0-0. </span></p> <p>The bottom photo is a shot of a British Army marching band providing pre-match entertainment prior to the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1966_FIFA_World_Cup#Quarter-finals" target="_blank">quarter-final</a> tie between West Germany and Uruguay at Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough ground. It reappeared in various guises throughout the seventies, eighties and nineties. </p> <p>The programme shown above is the 1973 official souvenir handbook and ranks as one of my all-time favourite cover designs.
