18/03/2010. Happy birthday Sheffield United. 121 years old today.

This is the programme cover from the centenary game on 18th March 1989 which was a Division 3 fixture against Reading. The Blades won 1-0 with a goal from Brian Deane in front of a crowd of 11867.

Sheffield United was founded as a cricket club in 1854 and was the first sports team in the World to call itself ‘United’. The club had no team and was in fact a management committee set up to operate the then new Bramall Lane sporting enclosure which opened in 1855.

EDIT: A footysphere facepalm moment. Apologies. United’s birthday is actually 22nd March not the 18th. Whoops!!
