History was made on Tuesday 30th November 1971 when Hvidovre of Copenhagen became the first continental visitors to play a game at York City’s Bootham Crescent ground.

Hvidovre were at the time of this game second in the Danish top flight & during the sixties had enjoyed a remarkable run of success. They won the Danish 4th division championship in 1962, followed by the 3rd division in 1963 and the 2nd division in 1964. To top it of they won the Danish Championship in 1966.

York City at the time were a 3rd division club having gained promotion from the 4th division at the end of the 70/71 season. Within two seasons they had made more club history by getting promoted to the 2nd division for the first time and then managing their highest ever league placing of 15th in 74/75.
