Now that the England v Poland game has been rearranged to tomorrow the 17th October it’s time to take a trip down memory lane to the same day 39 years ago in 1973 when England met Poland at Wembley.  The English were expecting to win comfortably and Brian Clough famously said of the Polish goalkeeper Jan Tomaszewski that he was like a “circus clown in gloves”. The clown had the last laugh however as he produced a dazzling yet unorthodox display to keep England at bay. The 1-1 draw was enough to deny England a place in the World Cup finals.
